Can you imagine? Dizze Rascal in Mowbray Park? You won’t have to imagine! On Saturday 9th Split welcomes for the first time; Dizzee Rascal.
For a decade, Dizzee has enjoyed iconic status amongst mainstream British music fans, after making a seamless transition from underground grime. Having worked with artists including Calvin Harris, Jessie J and DJ Fresh, the Bow rapper has cemented his place as a household name, with four number one singles and a Brit award to boot.
Dizzee, real name Dylan Mills, first demonstrated his talent on his Mercury Prize winning debut album, 2003’s Boy in da Corner, which has since been cited as one of the greatest grime records ever. Several British superstars including Ed Sheeran, Professor Green and Example have all spoken of the inspiration they drew from it, leading the “Stand up Tall” rapper to become one of the most respected figures in pop music.
The 28-year-old took a four year break between the releases of his platinum-selling fourth album Tongue n’ Cheek and his latest LP, and returned to the spotlight last year with his trademark catchy hooks, witty lyrics and eye-catching features. Mills teamed up with Tinie Tempah, Will.I.Am and Robbie Williams for the aptly-named The Fifth, in what The Guardian described as a “hit-packed, goofy album that may prove impossible to dislike”.
Between albums Dizzee performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, in his hometown of London, and focused on his record label, Dirtee Stank, before producing two EPs. He has previously received praise for the label’s aim; promoting talented artists with social problems, or as its president, Nick Denton, says; “People who, through the conditions they live in, might not be stable.”
Rascal will bring a string of tunes to Split Festival this August, including his number one hits “Bonkers”, “Holiday”, “Dance Wiv Me” and “Dirtee Disco”, as well as newer tracks including “Love This Town” and “Goin’ Crazy”. Famed for his energetic festival performances after memorable appearances at Glastonbury and V Festival Dizzee is sure to put on a fantastic show in Mowbray Park.
