Alex Burgess: Local Bands and Volunteering

Split Festival 2010 is something I remember very well, mainly because it’s when I decided I wanted to work within the North East music scene. Maximo Park, The Futureheads, Detroit Social Club, and Frankie and the Heartstrings were all at the top of the bill, with even more local talent playing, such as Little Comets, The Lake Poets, Young Liar and Coal Train. It was incredible.

2011- another year, another stellar line up. The Charlatans, The Drums, Mystery Jets, Dutch Uncles and Spector were just some of the bands to grace Ashbrooke with their presence. This year was different though. This year, I got to see what things were like behind the scenes. Greeting guests, helping with press, drinking Tequila with The Drums…yeah, it was pretty class. I returned again in 2012, to do it all over again. Another incredible year, with bands like The Chapman Family, Field Music, Pulled Apart By Horses and Public Image Ltd all making an appearance.

After a break last year, I’m so happy that Split Festival is returning again for 2014. With a new date in the summer, rather than autumn, and a new venue, this year the festival will be bigger and better! The headliners have been announced, and it’s pretty damn exciting. Dizzee Rascal, Maximo Park and The Cribs will be heading to Mowbray Park on the 9th and 10th of August to headline, and I cannot wait. I’ve been lucky enough to see all three acts before, and my goodness Sunderland, you’re in for a treat! Split Festival has always been the perfect platform for emerging and homegrown talent, too, and this year is no exception. I’m excited for more artist announcements, and so should you be.

To be asked to work at the festival again this year is an absolute honour. Everyone on the team and behind the scenes work so hard to make everything a success, and it’s truly rewarding to be a little part of that.

So Sunderland, I’m ready for Split Festival…are you?
